Liggett, Hunter (1857–1935) soldier; born in Reading, Pa. A tailor's son, he saw service on the western frontier, and in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine insurrection. Recognized for his intelligent professionalism, he served as president of the Army's War College (1912–17). In World War I, he led a division and a corps in France through several major actions, then commanded the U.S. First Army in the Meuse-Argonne offensive (autumn 1918), in which Allied forces pierced the Hindenburg Line. He commanded the Army of Occupation in Germany (1918–19) and retired in 1921. How to thank TFD for its existence?
