Likasi (lĭkäs`ē), formerly Jadotville (zhädōvēl`), city (1984 pop. 213,862), Katanga province, SE Congo (Kinshasa). It is a major industrial, mining, and transportation center. Copper and cobalt are mined and refined, and cement, chemicals, and beverages are manufactured. The city has an archaeological and mineral museum.
Likasi a city in the S Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Za?re): a centre of copper and cobalt production. Pop.: 345 000 (2005 est.) Likasi (until 1966, Jadotville), a city in southeast Zaire, in the region of Shaba. Population, 102,200 (1966). A railroad station on the Lubumbashi-Ilebo line; there is an airport. Likasi is the center of a copper and cobalt ore mining region. The city is an important center for nonferrous metallurgy: its electrometallurgical factories produce copper, cobalt, and cobalt alloys (in Likasi’s suburbs of Shituru and Panda). Zinc concentrates are processed in the city. There are also enterprises of the chemical industry (including a sulfuric acid factory) and of the building materials industry.
