Likert, Rensis (1903–81) psychologist, management theorist; born in Cheyenne, Wyo. At the University of Michigan (1946–70) he was founding director of the Institute for Social Research (1949–70). He worked on large organizations and theories of management. His major contributions included the development of a survey methodology that laid the groundwork for probability sampling, the "Likert scale" for measuring attitudes, and a theory of participatory management.
