Likhachev, Andrei

    0.01 sec.
Likhachev, Andrei Fedorovich

Born July 4 (16), 1832, on the estate Polianki-Nikol’skoe, now the village of Polianki, Kuibyshev Raion, Tatar ASSR; died there Aug. 11 (23), 1890, and was buried in Kazan. Russian archaeologist and numismatist.

Likhachev’s research on Bulgaria on the Volga and in Oriental numismatics is of great significance. He was the first to note the presence of Scythian and Sarmatian elements in the culture of the Volga Bulgars and the Finno-Ugric peoples of the Kama River region, which was subsequently confirmed. Likhachev’s archaeological, numismatic, and ethnologic collections led to the founding of the Kazan Museum, now the State Museum of the Tatar ASSR.
