An order of monocotyledonous plants in the subclass Liliidae having the typical characteristics of the subclass.

Botanically, agave plants are in the lily order Liliales and the order Asparagales (depending on which botanical taxonomic system you use), both of which define agave as a flowering plant.
The Dahlgren reference (Dahlgren, 1985) refers to a taxonomic paper on the Liliales, with colchicine being a marker of the taxon designated as Colchicaceae.
