Liliencron, Detlev Frieherr Von
Born June 3, 1844, in Kiel; died July 22, 1909, in Alt-Rahlstedt. German writer. Son of an impoverished Junker. Liliencron published the collection of poems The Adjutant’s Ride and Other Poems in 1883. He was one of the best-known impressionists in German poetry during the 1880’s and 1890’s. Typical of his manner are the poem Poggfred, a Topsy-Turvy Epic (1896), a kaleidoscope of episodes, portrayals, and literary reminiscences; the ballad Pidder Lüng, connected to folklore traditions; and the collection The Motley Beehive (1903). Liliencron also wrote a cycle of war stories. WORKSAusgewählte Werke. Hamburg, 1964.In Russian translation: In the collection Novye nemetskie poety. [Belaia Tserkov’] 1910.
