Lillo, Baldomero

Born Jan. 6, 1867, in Lota; died Sept. 10, 1923, in San Bernardo. Chilean writer. Son of a miner.

Lillo worked as an official in the mines. In 1904 he published a book of short stories entitled Underground (Russian translation Post No. 12, 1962) dealing with the drudgery of miners’ lives and exposing their cruel exploitation by the imperialist companies. The short stories in his collection Under the Sun (1907) portrayed the life of the Chilean peasantry. Lillo’s works established the basis for modern realistic literature in Chile.
