Lima Barreto, Afonso Henriques de
Born May 13, 1881, in Rio de Janeiro; died there Nov. 1, 1922. Brazilian writer. Son of an official. Lima Barreto’s sociopsychological novels Notes of an Archivist (1909; Russian translation, 1965), The Sad End of Policarpo Caresmo (1915), and The Life and Death of Gonzaga de Sa (1919) realistically re-created the life of the petite bourgeoisie, bureaucrats, and the urban poor. He wrote numerous psychological and satirical short stories exposing the bureaucratic system. Lima Barreto also wrote literary criticism defending the realistic method.
