On Atlantic coast of ME, south of Augusta; organized May 28, 1760 (prior to statehood) from York County. Name Origin: For either Enoch Lincoln (1788-1829), governor of ME (1827-29), or for Gen. Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810), officer in the Revolutionary War, U.S. secretary of war (1781-83), and lt. gov. of MA (1788).
