Lindley, John

Lindley, John, 1799–1865, English botanist and horticulturist. He organized the first flower shows in England and was influential in preserving the Royal Gardens at Kew (see Kew Gardens Kew Gardens , Kew, Surrey, S England, on the Thames just W of London; Royal Botanic Gardens is the official name. The gardens were founded by the dowager princess of Wales in 1761 and consisted of about 9 acres (3.6 hectares).

). In 1829 he was appointed the first professor of botany at the Univ. of London (later University College). Lindley wrote the botanical articles for the Penny Cyclopaedia and a major portion of those in Loudon's Encyclopaedia of Plants. He also wrote The Fossil Flora of Great Britain (with William Hutton, 1831–37), The Theory of Horticulture (1840), and The Vegetable Kingdom (1846).
