Group Marriage

an ancient form of marriage in which all the men of one tribe, family, or defined intra-family group had marriage bonds with all the women of another similar group. Group marriage arose from primitive sexual promiscuity, and in the course of its development it was replaced by the marriage of couples. The existence of group marriage in antiquity was established as a result of the ethnologic study of Australians and a number of other backward peoples.
