Linköping (lĭn`chö'pĭng), city (1990 pop. 82,450), capital of Östergötland co., S Sweden, near Lake Roxen. It is a commercial, industrial, and transportation center. Manufactures include motor vehicles, railroad cars, airplanes, electrical appliances, and processed food. An episcopal see since 1120, Linköping flourished in the Middle Ages as an intellectual and religious center. In 1598, Sigismund III, king of Sweden, was defeated by the future Charles IX at nearby Stangebrů and soon thereafter was formally deposed. Linköping has a splendid Romanesque cathedral (12th cent.; rebuilt 1230s), which has a 344-ft (105-m) spire. The city also has a 13th-century castle (restored 1931–32), a large library, and a university.

Population, 104,600 (1971). Linköping is an ancient industrial, commercial, and cultural center. The city’s industries include machine building (including motor vehicles and airplanes) and the production of ball bearings and wire, as well as textile, garment, chemical, furniture, and food enterprises. A branch of the University of Stockholm and a polytechnical institute are located in the city. Linköping was founded in 1120.
