Linköping (lĭn`chö'pĭng), city (1990 pop. 82,450), capital of Östergötland co., S Sweden, near Lake Roxen. It is a commercial, industrial, and transportation center. Manufactures include motor vehicles, railroad cars, airplanes, electrical appliances, and processed food. An episcopal see since 1120, Linköping flourished in the Middle Ages as an intellectual and religious center. In 1598, Sigismund III Sigismund III, 1566–1632, king of Poland (1587–1632) and Sweden (1592–99). The son of John III of Sweden and Catherine, sister of Sigismund II of Poland, he united the Vasa and Jagiello dynasties.
