Born Dec. 6 (18), 1858, in St. Petersburg; died Dec. 19, 1930, in Leningrad. Soviet metallurgist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1928).

Lipin graduated from the St. Petersburg Mining Institute in 1881; he became a professor there in 1896. He established the alloy steel industry (specifically the tungsten steel industry) in Russia at the Putilov Plant in 1896. His studies of the effect of alloying elements on the properties of metal fostered the creation of Russian high-grade steel metallurgy. He was the author of the fundamental work The Metallurgy of Cast Iron, Iron, and Steel (vols. 1–2, 1904–11; vol. 3, 2nd ed., 1926–27).
