Lipskii, Vladimir Ippolitovich
Born Feb. 27 (Mar. 11), 1863, in the village of Samostrely, now in Korets Raion, Rovno Oblast; died Feb. 24, 1937, in Odessa. Soviet botanist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1928). One of the organizers of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (academician, 1919; vice-president, 1921–22; president, 1922–28). In 1886, Lipskii graduated from the University of Kiev. He worked at the university from 1887 to 1894 and at the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden between 1894 and 1917. Lipskii was the director of the Botanical Garden in Odessa from 1928 to 1937. His principal works are on the systematics and geography of higher plants of the Caucasus, Middle Asia, and the Ukraine, as well as on the history and bibliography of botany in Russia.
