liquid crystal display (LCD)Optoelectronic device used in displays for watches, calculators, notebook computers, and other electronic devices. Current passed through specific portions of the liquid crystal solution causes the crystals to align, blocking the passage of light. Doing so in a controlled and organized manner produces visual images on the display screen. The advantage of LCDs is that they are much lighter and consume less power than other display technologies (e.g., cathode-ray tubes). These characteristics make them an ideal choice for flat-panel displays, as in portable laptop and notebook computers. liquid crystal displaySee LCD.

In March, Canon held a press conference to show investors that it is the world's best in copiers, laser printers, digital cameras, digital video cameras and equipment for making liquid crystal displays. New requirements for computers include increased energy efficiency and durability, exposure limits for electromagnetic emissions, a more specific recycling policy, and a limit on the mercury content of liquid crystal displays. As reported in the May 3 issue of the journal Nature, IBM has demonstrated a new non-contact method that uses beams of ions - electrically charged atoms - to align the liquid crystal molecules inside the flat-panel liquid crystal displays used in portable and desktop computers and other electronic devices. |
