Lissagaray, Prosper Olivier 

Bom Nov. 24, 1838, in Auch; died Jan. 25, 1901, in Paris. French journalist, leftist republican.

Lissagaray participated in the republican movement of the 1860’s. During the Paris Commune of 1871 he edited the revolutionary newspapers L’Action and Tribun du peuple. He fought at the barricades. After the fall of the Commune, Lissagaray emigrated to Belgium and then to Great Britain. In London he became acquainted with K. Marx. In 1876 he published a book about the Commune that won high praise from Marx. After the amnesty of 1880 he returned to France. From 1882 to 1883 and again from 1888 to 1893, he published the left-republican newspaper La Bataille. At the same time he opposed the French Workers’ Party and its leaders.
