It includes a working vocabulary of computer and information system components, the fundamental principles of computer processing and a perspective for how non-technical people interact with technical people. The term has been attributed to Andrew Molnar in the early 1970s. He was director of the Office of Computing Activities at the National Science Foundation.

The information literacy competencies need to be integrated into library literacy, media literacy, computer literacy, Internet literacy, and research literacy as well as critical-thinking skills. This enables the students to complete lab activities geared towards helping them gain competency in information literacy, computer literacy and the transition material. In 2004, the foundation awarded more than 26,000 grants totaling over $70 million to charitable and nonprofit agencies that focus on improving literacy, computer and technology skills, and identifying domestic violence solutions. |
