Established: Authorized October 24, 1992. Location: In northeast Alabama, 40 miles west of Rome, accessible via AL 35 east of Fort Payne. Facilities: Restrooms, picnic area. DeSoto State Park (see separate entry in Alabama State Parks section) adjoins the preserve and offers lodging, campsites, a restaurant, and other ammenities. Activities: Hiking, primitive camping, whitewater paddling, canoeing, swimming, fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, wildlife viewing, auto touring. Special Features: Preserve protects Little River, the nation's longest mountaintop river, which flows for almost its entire length down the middle of Lookout Mountain. The river and canyon systems offer spectacular landscapes including upland forest, waterfalls, canyon rims and bluffs, stream riffles and pools, boulders, and sandstone cliffs.
