Little Russia
a region of the former SW Soviet Union, consisting chiefly of Ukraine

Little Russia 

(Malorossiia), a name for the Ukraine, used in official documents of tsarist Russia, historical sources, and noble-bourgeois historiography. The term “Little Russia” arose in the 14th century and originally referred to Galician and Volynian Rus’. In the 17th century, after the reunification of the Ukraine with Russia, it was used officially in government circles. The word does not appear in Soviet historiography.
