Liubomirov, Pavel Grigor’evich
Born Apr 12 (24), 1885, in the village of Ivanovka, Saratov Province; died Dec. 7, 1935, in Moscow. Soviet historian. Liubomirov graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1910 and taught there as a privatdocent between 1915 and 1917. From 1920 to 1930 he headed the subdepartment of Russian history at the University of Saratov. From 1932 to 1935 he worked in scientific institutions and higher educational institutions in Moscow, including the State Historical Museum, the Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature, and History, and the Historical-Archival Institute. His principal research dealt with the socioeconomic history of Russia in the 17th and 18th centuries. Liubomirov’s works on the history of Russian industry from the 17th to the early 19th centuries and his article “Feudal Russia of the 17th and 18th Centuries” (published in the Granat Encyclopedic Dictionary, vol. 36, issue 3) contain much factual material on the origin of capitalism in Russia. He also wrote on Russian social thought of the 18th century (A. N. Radishchev and M. M. Shcherbatov) and on the Schism and the Old Believers.
