Livanova, Tamara

Livanova, Tamara Nikolaevna 

(married name, Ferman). Born Apr. 5 (18), 1909, in Kishinev. Soviet musicologist; doctor of art studies (1940). Member of the CPSU since 1948.

Livanova graduated in 1932 from the Moscow Conservatory, where she had studied with V. E. Ferman and M. V. Ivanov-Boretskii. She taught music history at the conservatory from 1932 to 1956 (from 1939 as a professor) and became a senior scientific worker at the Institute of Art History in Moscow in 1944.

Livanova has done extensive research in Russian and Western European music of the 17th-19th centuries and its historical relation to other branches of art. Her main works include Essays and Materials in the Field of the History of Russian Musical Culture (1938), History of Western European Music Before 1789 (1940), Musical Dramaturgy of J. S. Bach and Its Historical Relations (1948), Russian Musical Culture of the 18th Century in Relation to Literature, Theater, and Everyday Life (vols. 1–2, 1952–53), Opera Criticism in Russia (fascs. 1–4, 1966–73; fasc. 1, with V. P. Protopopov), and Music Bibliography of the Russian Periodical Press of the 19th Century (fascs. 1–6, 1960–73; fasc. 5 with O. A. Vinogradova). Livanova has been awarded two orders and a medal.
