Llaneros

(from Spanish llano, “steppe”, “plains”), Indians of the plains of South America. They work as shepherds, guarding herds of cattle and horses. The llaneros are magnificent horsemen and marksmen. During the war of independence of the Spanish-American colonies (1810-26), the llaneros originally sided with the Spaniards, but after S. Bolivar issued a decree allotting land to soldiers of the liberation armies in 1817, they went over to the side of the patriots. The llaneros’ cavalry was greatly feared by the Spaniards.

The Llaneros, listed by Cordero, are now absorbed by the Jicarilla Apache who have an assigned reservation touching the Colorado border west of Chama.
Many others helped as well, special thanks to the llaneros on Hato Pinero.
It was on the hato in 1927, during a visit by author Romulo Gallegos--Venezuela's future president--that Estrada's poet-grandfather told the story of Pancha Vasquez, a neighbor whom the llaneros claimed hexed her enemies, seduced men to snatch their land and skinned cows alive.
