Lo Gatto, Ettore 

Born May 20, 1890, in Naples. Italian literary critic. Professor of Russian language and literature at the universities of Rome and Naples. Translator and popularizer of Slavic, especially Russian, literature.

Lo Gatto wrote The History of Russian Literature (vols. 1–7, 1927–45), The History of Modern Russian Literature (vols. 1–2, 1958), Italian Masters in Russia (vols. 1–3, 1927; 1934; 1943), The Myth of Saint Petersburg (1960), the two-volume work History of the Russian Theater (1952), and works devoted to the writings of prominent Russian authors. Lo Gatto has devoted particular attention to the study of Pushkin’s works, making a two-volume Italian translation of Pushkin’s prose and poetry, complete with footnotes and commentary. In 1960 he published Pushkin: The Story of the Poet and His Hero.
