Lobashev, Mikhail Efimovich 

Born Oct. 29 (Nov. 11) 1907, in the village of Bol’shoe Frolovo, now in Buinsk Raion, Tatar ASSR; died Jan. 4, 1971, in Leningrad. Soviet geneticist and physiologist; professor (1953); Honored Scientist of the RSFSR. Member of the CPSU from 1941.

Lobashev graduated from Leningrad State University in 1931 and then taught there. He participated in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45. He became head of a laboratory at the I. P. Pavlov Institute of Physiology in Koltushy in 1949 and chairman of the department of genetics and breeding at Leningrad State University in 1957. Lobashev’s main works dealt with the physiology of mutation, genetics of behavior, comparative and descriptive genetics, action and interaction of genes at the molecular level, physiology of higher nervous activity, and the development of adaptive reflexes in animal development (concept of signal heredity). He was awarded three orders and several medals.
