In a superheterodyne radio, a local oscillator is an electronic circuit that generates a frequency based on the desired channel. The output of the oscillator is the channel frequency typically added to the intermediate frequency (IF). See PLL.

local oscillator [′lō·kəl ′äs·ə‚lād·ər]

The oscillator in a superheterodyne receiver, whose output is mixed with the incoming modulated radio-frequency carrier signal in the mixer to give the frequency conversions needed to produce the intermediate-frequency signal.
