Lodochnikov, Vladimir Nikitovich
(also Vartan Nikitovich Lodochnikov). Born May 14 (26), 1887, in Georgievsk, in present-day Stavropol’ Krai; died Jan. 11, 1943, in Kislovodsk. Soviet geologist and petrographer. Lodochnikov graduated from the Institute of Mines in Petrograd in 1916. In 1918 he began to work for the Geological Committee, and from 1922 to 1930 he was a professor at the Leningrad Institute of Mines. He carried out geological research in the Altai, Vostochnyi Saian, and Caucasus. His main works dealt with methods of studying rock-forming minerals and with serpentinites and rocks associated with them. Lodochnikov studied various problems of petrogenesis; in particular, he formulated the empirical “rule of polarity” of postmagmatic processes. The methods of representing the composition of multicomponent systems, which Lodochnikov published in 1924–26, are still important today.
