Loeb, Leonard B. (Benedict) (1891–1978) physicist; born in Zurich, Switzerland. Brought to the U.S.A. as an infant, he grew up in California. He served in World War I, studied in England, then at the University of Chicago (1919–23). He spent the rest of his career at the University of California: Berkeley, remaining active after his retirement in 1958. He was a specialist in gaseous electronics, authored 12 textbooks and approximately 180 scientific papers, and was a beloved mentor for his students throughout his career as a professor.
