Loening, Grover (1888–1976) aircraft designer; born in Bremen, Germany (where his father was U.S. consul). He held three degrees from Columbia University including the first ever awarded in aeronautics. As owner of two different companies, he made a variety of contributions to aviation such as the creation of the rigid strut bracing system and the retractable undercarriage.
