Logunov, Anatolii Alekseevich 

Born Dec. 30, 1926, in Obsharovka, now in Bezenchuk Raion, Kuibyshev Oblast. Soviet theoretical physicist. Academician (1972; corresponding member, 1968) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Member of the CPSU since 1960.

Logunov began working at Moscow University after his graduation in 1951. From 1956 to 1963 he was deputy director of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. Since 1963 he has been director of the Institute of High-Energy Physics at Serpukhov. His principal studies deal with quantum field theory and the physics of elementary particles. He developed a method of dispersion relations and established the relationship between different physical processes at high energies. In 1967–68 he proposed and developed a new approach to the problem of the multiple production of particles at high energies (inclusion processes). The scientific center of the Institute of High-energy Physics was created under Logunov’s direction and a 70 GeV proton accelerator was put into operation in 1967 (Lenin Prize, 1967). Logunov has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and several medals.
