Lombok

Lombok (lŏmbŏk`), island (1990 pop. 2,403,025), c.1,825 sq mi (4,725 sq km), E Indonesia, one of the Lesser Sundas, separated from Bali by the Strait of Lombok. Mataram, with the port of Ampenan nearby, is the chief town. The volcanic and mountainous terrain rises to 12,224 ft (3,726 m) at Mt. Rinjani (Rindjani). Its southern area is a fertile plain producing corn, rice, coffee, cotton, and tobacco. The island is inhabited mainly by Sasaks, Muslims of Malay descent; there are also Balinese and ethnic Chinese. First visited by the Dutch in 1674, Lombok became part of the Netherlands East Indies in 1894. The English naturalist A. R. Wallace noted that Lombok is on the line where the fauna of Asia and Australia meet. A state university is in Mataram.

Lombok

Island, south-central Indonesia. It is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, separated from Bali (west) by the Lombok Strait and from Sumbawa (east) by the Alas Strait. It occupies an area of 2,098 sq mi (5,435 sq km). Lombok is divided by two mountain chains; its higher northern range rises to 12,224 ft (3,726 m) at Mount Rinjani. It was ruled by the sultan of Makasar in 1640. The Balinese later seized control and established four kingdoms there; the Dutch ruled the kingdom of Mataram from 1843 and gained control of the entire island by the late 19th century. Following World War II, it became part of Indonesia.

an island of Indonesia, in the Nusa Tenggara Islands east of Java: came under Dutch rule in 1894; important biologically as being transitional between Asian and Australian in flora and fauna, the line of demarcation beginning at Lombok Strait (a channel between Lombok and Bali, connecting the Flores Sea with the Indian Ocean). Chief town: Mataram. Pop.: 2 500 000 (1991). Area: 4730 sq. km (1826 sq. miles)
