Lomouri, Niko Iosifovich 

Born Feb. 7 (19), 1852, in the village of Arbo, in present-day Gori Raion; died Apr. 17 (30), 1915, in Gori. Georgian writer.

The son of a priest, Lomouri graduated from the Kiev Divinity School in 1879. He was a teacher for 30 years, first in Tbilisi and later in Gori. His first works were published in the 1870’s. He defended the interests of the Georgian peasants from the Populist standpoint, truthfully depicting the poverty and backwardness of the village in such stories as “The Mermaid,” “From All Directions,” and “The Fate of the Unfortunate.” He also wrote children’s stories, the best known of which are “Little Friends” and “Kadzhana.” He translated the poetry of Byron, N. A. Dobroliubov, and T. G. Shevchenko into Georgian.
