long scale The numbering system used in many European countries that do not speak the English language. Often called the British numbering system, it was used in the U.K. until the mid-1970s, and numbers in older British documents refer to the long scale. In the long scale, a billion is a million millions rather than a thousand millions, which is the "short scale." A trillion is a million billions rather than a thousand billions, and so on.
