(Russian acronym, DON), striking the enemy with artillery fire from great distances. Long-range fire is ordinarily used in defense and consists of powerful fire assaults against areas of troop concentration and important targets (headquarters. control posts. road junctions. artillery positions, and so on) in the depth of the enemy disposition. Fire is usually requested and adjusted from an airplane. a helicopter. or with the assistance of a radar station.
