Longitudinal Wave

longitudinal wave [‚län·jə′tüd·ən·əl ′wāv]
(physics)
A wave in which the direction of some vector characteristic of the wave, for example, the displacement of particles of the transmitting medium, is along the direction of propagation.

Longitudinal Wave 

a wave whose direction of propagation coincides with the direction in which the particles of the medium are displaced. Elastic waves in gases and liquids are examples of longitudinal waves.
