Lopez, Aaron

Lopez, Aaron (1731–82) merchant; born in Portugal. He came to Newport, R.I. (1752) and began to practice his Jewish faith. He soon had a large merchant fleet that traded along the Atlantic coast and in the West Indies but the American Revolution ruined his business. Greatly respected in Newport for his honesty and reliability, he drowned at sea.
