In east-central TN, south of Oak Ridge; organized as Christiana Sumner County Jun 2, 1870 from Blount, Monroe, McMinn, and Roane counties; name changed Jul 7, 1870. Name Origin: For John Campbell (1705-82), 4th Earl of Loudoun, commander of British forces during the French and Indian Wars.

Area (sq mi): 247.31 (land 228.88; water 18.43). Pop per sq mi: 189.60.
Pop 2005: 43,387. State rank: 32. Pop change: 2000-20005 11.00%; 1990-2000 25.10%. Pop 2000: 39,086 (White 95.20%; Black or African American 1.10%; Hispanic or Latino 2.30%; Asian 0.20%; Other 2.70%). Foreign born: 1.80%. Median age: 41.00.
Income 2000: per capita $21,061; median household $40,401; Pop below poverty level: 10.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $25,400-$27,515.
Unemployment 2004: 4.40%. Change from 2000: 0.90%. Median travel time to work: 24.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 49.30%.

Just outside the nation''s capitol, Loudon County has consistently ranked as one of the fastest growing counties in the United States.
Any structure constructed in Loudon County must abide by the building codes for Viginia, the "Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code".
