On northeastern border of VA, northwest of Washington, D.C.; organized Mar 25, 1757 from Fairfax County. Name Origin: For John Campbell (1705-82), 4th Earl of Loudoun, commander in chief of British forces during the French and Indian Wars.

Area (sq mi): 521.10 (land 519.85; water 1.25). Pop per sq mi: 491.50.
Pop 2005: 255,518. State rank: 6. Pop change: 2000-20005 50.70%; 1990-2000 96.90%. Pop 2000: 169,599 (White 79.60%; Black or African American 6.90%; Hispanic or Latino 5.90%; Asian 5.30%; Other 5.00%). Foreign born: 11.30%. Median age: 33.60.
