Louis II the German
Born circa 804; died Aug. 28, 876, in Frankfurt am Main. King from 843 of the kingdom of the East Franks; founder of the German branch of the Carolingians. Son of Louis the Pious. By the first repartition of the empire (817), Louis II received Bavaria; by the Treaty of Verdun (843) he received the German regions east of the Rhine, and by the Treaty of Mersen (870), eastern Lorraine. In attempting to subdue the Slavic lands, Louis attacked the Bodrichi (844) and interfered in the internal affairs of the Great Moravian State. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
