Lourenço Marques
(now Maputo), the capital and principal city of Mozambique. Population, 384,000 (1970 census, including suburbs). Lourenæo Marques is a port on Delagoa Bay in the Indian Ocean (with coal and oil harbors) and an important transit point on the route around Africa. The city is linked by railroads with the Republic of South Africa and Southern Rhodesia. It also has an airport. Coal, lumber, cotton, sugar, sisal, copra, and fruits are exported from Lourencæo Marques. Cement, ceramic articles, and footwear are produced; metalworking, woodworking, textile, and chemical enterprises are located there. The city has a university and zoological and botanical gardens.
