Lovinescu, Horia
Born Aug. 20, 1917, in Fălticeni. Rumanian playwright. Lovinescu’s first play, which received a state prize, was Light From Ulm (1952). The play The Destroyed Citadel (1954, state prize; produced in the USSR as In the Home of Mr. Dragomirescu) promoted Lovinescu to the ranks of the country’s leading playwrights. The central issues of his plays are the clash between the old and new morality, the psychological ramifications of the recognition of the social changes in the Socialist Republic of Rumania, and the struggle for peace (the plays Hotel at the Crossroads, 1951; Fever, 1962; Death of an Artist, 1964;and I Too Was in Arcadia, 1971).
