In 1791–1841 it was known as Lower Canada and in 1841–67 as Canada East. Populated mainly by French settlers who wanted to preserve their distinctive identity and cultural traditions, it was reluctant to join the proposed confederation with Canada West. It finally agreed to confederation in 1867, providing that it would remain a territorial and governmental unit in which French Canadians would have an electoral majority. While this review does not intend to recount the history or structure of the Canadian soldiers during the War of 1812, readers of this journal may be surprised to learn that between 1812 and 1816, six Canadian regiments (1) subject to the War Office were raised in Upper and Lower Canada and the Maritimes. Particularly ambitious was the enquiry into educational conditions in Lower Canada of 1838-9, conducted by the Bullet Education Commission. |
