Established: The Lower East Side Tenement Museum was chartered in 1988. On November 12, 1998, it was designated a National Historic Area affiliated with the National Park Service.

Special Features: The heart of the Tenement Museum is its tenement building at 97 Orchard Street, home to an estimated 7,000 people from 20 nations between 1863 and 1935. The museum promotes tolerance and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences at this "gateway to America."
