Lower Thracian Lowland
a lowland in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula, in European Turkey, Bulgaria, and Greece. Situated in the lower Maritsa basin, the lowland is rimmed by the spurs of the Istranca, Sakar, and Rhodope mountains. The surface is flat, with hills around the edges. The lowland is composed of Neogene lacustrine deposits covered with river alluvium. Annual precipitation totals 400–500 mm, and there are summer droughts. The natural vegetation is a deciduous secondary brush formation. The lowland is irrigated, and wheat, tobacco, corn, and cotton are the chief crops. There are also orchards and vineyards. The principal cities are Edirne (Turkey) and Svilengrad (Bulgaria). Want to thank TFD for its existence?
