Łowmiański, Henryk 

Born Aug. 22, 1898, in Daugudžiai, in present-day Lithuanian SSR. Polish Slavic historian. Professor at the Universities of Vilnius (from 1934) and of Poznań (from 1945). Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1952). Editor of the first volume of the History of Poland (1957).

Łowmiań ski is the author of works on Polish medieval history, as well as studies on the history of Russia and other Slavic countries. In his work The Problem of the Role of the Norsemen in the Origin of Slavic States (1957) he criticized theories asserting the decisive role of the Norsemen in the formation of Slavic states. His Ancient History of Poland (1963) was awarded the State Prize in 1964.
