Lucid, Shannon Wells

 orig. Shannon Matilda Wells

(born Jan. 14, 1943, Shanghai, China) U.S. astronaut. She received her doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Oklahoma and worked at the Oklahoma Medical Research Association until she was selected as an astronaut in 1978. She made five flights on the space shuttle, in 1985, 1989, 1991, 1993, and 1996. The last of these was to the Russian space station Mir, where she stayed for 188 days. This flight gave her the record of most time spent in space by a woman: 223 days.
