Ludhiana (l
dēä`nə), city (1991 pop. 1,042,740), Punjab state, NW India. Founded in the late 15th cent., it lies on the old Grand Trunk Road, the great thoroughfare connecting Delhi with Amritsar. Hosiery, cotton textiles, bicycle parts, and sewing machines are the important manufactures. Violence between Sikhs and Hindus has crippled the city's economic and social development.Ludhiana a city in N India, in the central Punjab: Punjab Agricultural University (1962). Pop.: 1 395 053 (2001) Ludhiana a city in northern India in Punjab, at a ford of the Sutlej River. Population, 401,100 (1971). Ludhiana is a transportation junction. Textiles, knitted goods, metalworking, and machine building (especially tools and agricultural equipment) are among the city’s industries, and there are also manufacturers of plywood, matches, furniture, and leather goods.
