Lugano

a city in southern Switzerland in the canton of Ticino, on Lake Lugano. Population, 22,700 (1970). It is a railroad junction. The city has textile, tobacco, and chocolate industries and is a tourist attraction.

Historically, the outward appearance of the city has been determined by the development of Italian architecture. Among the important architectural buildings are the Gothic-Romanesque church of San Lorenzo (13th century; Renaissance style facade), the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli (1499; frescoes, 1529, by B. Luini), baroque churches (17th and 18th centuries), and the town hall (1844), which is late classical. Buildings from the 20th century include the cantonal library (1940, architect R. Tami) and a radio studio building (1961, architects A. Camenzind and others). There is a fine arts museum in Lugano.
