Luk’ianenko, Pavel Panteleimonovich
Born May 27 (June 6), 1901, in the stanitsa (large cossack village) of Ivanovskaia, in present-day Krasnoarmeisk Raion, Krasnodar Krai; died June 13, 1973, in Krasnodar. Soviet plant breeder. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964). Academician of the V. I. Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1948). Twice Hero of Socialist Labor (1957, 1971). Member of the CPSU from 1964. Luk’ianenko graduated from the Kuban’ Agricultural Institute in 1926. From 1930 to 1956 he was a senior scientist and deputy director for science (from 1941) of the Krasnodar Breeding Station and from 1956 head of the breeding department of the Krasnodar Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture. Luk’ianenko was the breeder or co-breeder of 15 regionalized (1972) winter wheat varieties, including Bezostaia I, Avrora, and Kavkaz. He was a delegate to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses of the CPSU and a deputy to the sixth through eighth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1946 and the Lenin Prize in 1959. Luk’ianenko was a member of the European Association of Breeders (1965), an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1965), a foreign member of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1967) and the Royal Academy of Agriculture and Forestry of Sweden (1968), and an honorary doctor of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the German Democratic Republic. He was awarded two orders of Lenin, two other orders, medals, the I. V. Michurin Gold Medal, and three large gold medals of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition and the Exhibition of the Achievements of the National Economy of the USSR.
