Lumberton, city (1990 pop. 18,601), seat of Robeson co., S N.C., on the Lumber River; founded 1787, inc. 1852. It is in an agricultural area, with tobacco, grains, soybeans, and livestock. Manufactures include transformers, textiles and clothing, sheet metal, athletic shoes, loudspeakers, and boxes.
